Environmental Issues

The Niger Delta is home to over 20 million people and is the largest wetland and
is the third longest drainage basin in Africa. The environment can be divided
into 4 different sections: coastal barrier islands, mangrove swamp forests,
freshwater swamps and lowland rainforests. It contains one of the highest
concentrations of biodiversity and supports many different flora and fauna. It
has a fertile land and many beautiful trees, but the area could lose up to 40%
of its terrain due to large scale dam construction and the carelessness of the
oil industry. The water is being slowly poisoned and the agricultural land is
being destroyed by oil spills. After 25 years, the government has still done
nothing to save the environment, let alone the oil companies, who do not take
action in problems they created. There has been a loss of over 300 million
barrels of petroleum spilled into the Delta, and more than 70% was not
recovered.

What we can do

We are currently attempting to be as eco-friendly as possible. We use animal transportation for a more immersive experience and to use a minimum amount of fossil fuels. There are many opportunities to admire the wildlife and fauna. There are also things you can do to help keep the ecosystems clean. You can take part in many cleanups and learn more about the
wildlife on your own while on your trip to the Niger River.
